A sinus lift is a special type of bone graft we perform when a patient’s jawbone is too thin to support a dental implant replacing an upper tooth, since the implant would otherwise penetrate the sinus membrane. We carefully access the sinus membrane, push it upward, and hold it in its new position with substitute bone material until there is enough bone to place the implant.
Soft tissue grafts, also called root coverage grafts, treat gum recession by using tissue from the roof of the mouth to re-grow gum tissue over an exposed root. We perform these grafts to reduce tooth sensitivity and stop gum recession from progressing.
In a healthy mouth, gum tissue normally covers and protects the tooth roots. Without that protection, root surface decay often sets in, and because root decay is difficult to repair, we commonly see teeth lost to long-term root exposure.
