Pre-Extraction Examination and Preparation
Your tooth extraction appointment will begin with a thorough examination of your mouth and the tooth to be extracted. We will review your medical history and may take X-rays to get a clear view of the tooth’s position and root structure. This information helps plan the most effective extraction method.
During this phase of your tooth extraction appointment, Dr. Kotlarek will also explain the procedure, discuss anesthesia options, and address any questions or concerns you may have.
The Extraction Procedure
The actual extraction is the core of your tooth extraction appointment. We will begin by administering local anesthesia to numb the area around the tooth. You may feel pressure during the procedure but shouldn’t experience pain. For a simple extraction, our dentist will use specialized tools to loosen the tooth and gently remove it from its socket.
If you have a surgical extraction, typical for impacted wisdom teeth, Dr. Kotlarek may need to make a small incision in your gum to access the tooth. The length of this part of your tooth extraction appointment can vary depending on the complexity of the extraction, but it typically takes about 20-40 minutes per tooth.
Post-Extraction Care and Instructions
Following tooth extraction, the final portion of your session focuses on post-procedure care. We will apply gauze to the extraction site to reduce bleeding and promote clot formation.
You will receive detailed instructions on how to care for the extraction site in the coming days, including information on pain management, eating and drinking, and oral hygiene. Dr. Kotlarek may prescribe pain medication or antibiotics if necessary.
